The Silverton Wind Farm consisted of 58 GE Renewables 3.4-130 wind turbine generators,
situated near Broken Hill in New South Wales. ARES transported all wind turbine components
from the Port of Adelaide to site, a distance of 524km one way.

Project Challenges

Transporting oversized wind turbine components over 524 kilometres presented a significant logistical challenge.

Every journey required detailed route planning, permit coordination, fatigue management and escort scheduling to safely move oversized loads from Adelaide through regional South Australia and into western New South Wales.

Engineering Long-Distance Transport

Every journey required detailed route planning, permit coordination, fatigue management and escort scheduling to safely move oversized loads from Adelaide through regional South Australia and into western New South Wales.

The project site was constructed across a rugged ridgeline with gradients of up to 22%. Transporting heavy tower sections and 100-tonne nacelles along steep, uneven access roads demanded specialised transport equipment, experienced operators and carefully controlled vehicle movements.

At 64 metres, the turbine blades were the longest ever transported in Australia at the time. Their size required specialist blade transport equipment, police escorts and detailed route assessments to safely navigate metropolitan Adelaide before beginning the long journey to site.

Conventional heavy haulage equipment alone was not enough for the steepest sections of the site. ARES deployed its purpose-built BIGFOOT heavy recovery vehicle to provide additional towing capability and traction, enabling oversized transport combinations to safely negotiate challenging climbs and difficult terrain.

Results

ARES successfully delivered every wind turbine component to the Silverton Wind Farm, completing almost 700 oversized deliveries across more than 730,000 kilometres of transport operations.

 

Despite the project’s long transport corridor, challenging terrain and oversized loads, the delivery program was completed safely and efficiently through detailed planning, engineered transport solutions and experienced project execution. The successful completion of Silverton reinforced ARES’ capability to manage complex renewable energy logistics at scale, setting a benchmark for future wind farm projects across Australia.
