The Caulfield-to-Dandenong (CTD) Level Crossing Removal Project (LCRP) included the removal of 9 level crossings, an elevated “Skyrail” section of track and 5 new elevated train stations in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs. ARES were contracted to transport oversized concrete beams, pillars and crossheads for the project.

Project Challenges

The project was built around active rail lines and ran through Melbourne’s busiest road infrastructure, so around 400 Super Tee beams had to move overnight from Melton, timed to rail occupations and closures, with over half the deliveries time-critical and no room for disruption to Metro Trains.

The project was built around active rail lines, so deliveries had to be timed to rail occupations and closures. Over half were time-sensitive, and Ares delivered every segment on time without any disruption to Metro Trains.

The southern section consisted of some 400 Super Tee beams, delivered at a rate of 4 to 6 a night. The beams travelled through the night and were unloaded in the early hours of the morning before the trailers reloaded to deliver again the following night.

Components originated in Melton in the north-west and had to reach level crossings across the south-east, from Murrumbeena to Noble Park. With permission from the Department of Transport and Transurban, the beams travelled over the West Gate Bridge and through the Burnley Tunnel.

As a high-publicity major infrastructure project, execution had to be flawless to avoid unnecessary delays or disruptions. The custom beam trailers were all fitted with the handrails and safety systems expected on a Tier 1 project.

Results

On the largest of the Level Crossing Removal Project’s awarded sub-projects, Ares delivered some 400 Super Tee beams from Melton to level crossings across Melbourne’s south-east, from Murrumbeena to Noble Park, at 4 to 6 a night and over the West Gate Bridge and through the Burnley Tunnel under permit.

 

With the work built around active rail lines and over half the deliveries time-sensitive, every segment arrived on time and without any disruption to Metro Trains, delivered to the Tier 1 safety standards the project demanded.
