The Warradarge Wind Farm consisted of 51 Vestas V136 3.6MW wind turbine generators, situated in Western Australia. ARES transported all wind turbine components from the Port of Henderson south of Perth to site, a distance.

Project Challenges

Warradarge was delivered in two stages. Stage 1 completed in 2020, and Stage 2 completed in May 2026. Across both, the team faced compounding disruptions that demanded constant re-planning without letting the schedule slip. Here’s a look at the key challenges navigated to get every component safely to site.

Doubling the Complexity

Running Warradarge alongside the Yandin Wind Farm meant doubling almost everything at once: cargo volumes, equipment requirements, storage needs and scheduling pressure. Instead of managing one wind farm delivery program, the team was effectively coordinating two simultaneous 51-turbine campaigns through a single port, all while maintaining the pace and precision each client expected.

Mother Nature made no allowances for the delivery schedule. Major bushfires across Western Australia delayed deliveries to site between December 2019 and January 2020, and just as the project regained momentum, storms and heavy rainfall damaged the Warradarge site entry road, shutting it to all heavy traffic for a full week in February.

In March 2020, COVID-19 arrived in the middle of an already complex delivery program. New health protocols, PPE requirements and permit conditions had to be introduced almost overnight. Transport was fortunately classified as an essential service, which helped keep disruption to deliveries to a minimum, but it still demanded fast adaptation across the whole operation.

At the combined peak of Warradarge and Yandin, the team was moving five complete wind turbines every week, around 45 individual deliveries, or roughly 8 to 9 per day. Sustaining that rate required tight coordination between loading and unloading operations at port, permitting processes and on-site supervision, all running in lockstep to avoid bottlenecks.

Results

Completed on schedule, Stage 2 extended the coordinated, engineering-led delivery approach ARES established across the original Warradarge and Yandin programme.

 

At the peak of both projects, ARES sustained a combined rate of 5 complete wind turbines per week, delivering 15 blades and 35 tower sections every week: the highest run rate ever achieved for wind turbine transport. Underpinning it all was an unflinching focus on HSE and industry-best safety practices, and the reward was two major projects delivered without any major safety incidents.
